Mumbai's Vasai-Virar to get its first animal crematorium soon
Mumbai: After years of requests from residents and animal welfare advocates, Mumbai’s Vasai-Virar is finally set to get its first animal crematorium. The Visar-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) confirmed that nearly 90% of the construction work is complete at the site located near the test range in Gokhivare.
For years, the absence of proper animal cremation facilities in the area meant that pet and stray animal carcasses were often left unattended or disposed of in unhygienic ways. This not only raised serious sanitation concerns but also caused emotional distress for pet owners who lacked a dignified way to say goodbye to their beloved animals.
A VVMC official stated, “Work is in its final stages, and the remaining part will be completed soon.” The facility aims to provide a respectful and environmentally friendly solution for animal remains, making an important step forward in local animal welfare and civic responsibility.
Officials mentioned that the project had been delayed for several years due to challenges in identifying suitable land and obtaining necessary environmental clearances. However, with construction nearing completion, the Vasai-Virar animal crematorium is expected to be operational soon.
Recently, Mira-Bhayandar inaugurated Maharashtra’s first eco-friendly gas-based pet crematorium at Navghar, setting an example for sustainable animal care. The upcoming VVMC crematorium in Mumbai’s suburbs is expected to follow similar methods, ensuring a cleaner environment and a humane option for both pet owners and civic authorities.
This development highlights the growing commitment of Mumbai’s suburban bodies toward better animal welfare infrastructure and improved public hygiene.
